Environmental targets: Defra publishes statutory water limits

Following a lengthy public consultation during 2022, the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) has secured Parliamentary approval for its statutory framework around reducing household and non-household water demand.

Defra’s new environmental targets are now legally binding and will help to ensure that protecting our water supplies for the future has the focus it badly needs. Importantly, it has positioned water preservation as critical as air quality, biodiversity and resource efficiency/waste reduction.
