David Lloyd Leisure, the UK’s largest health and wellness operator, is taking decisive steps towards environmental responsibility by committing to achieving carbon net zero by 2030.

This ambition places sustainability at the heart of the company’s operations, ensuring that every aspect of the organisation, from energy consumption to water usage, is carefully managed to reduce its environmental impact.
With a large network of clubs across the UK and Europe, David Lloyd Leisure recognises the key role water plays in its services, from swimming pools and spa areas to showers and general welfare facilities.
This awareness led to a strategic partnership with Waterscan, to help David Lloyd Leisure gain greater control over its water consumption and support its overarching sustainability objectives.
Lee Manley, Head of Sustainability at David Lloyd Leisure, has been at the forefront of this transformation.
“Our commitment to sustainability with Waterscan is not just about ticking boxes, it’s about genuinely improving the way we operate and making a meaningful impact. We have made a firm commitment to achieving net zero across all three scopes of emissions by 2030, and water plays a critical role in that journey.”

Prior to working with Waterscan, David Lloyd Leisure faced a number of administrative and operational challenges relating to its water management. The deregulation of the water market in England and Wales presented an opportunity for the organisation to consolidate its water retail contract, but this proved to be a complex and resource-intensive process.
Recognising the need for a more strategic approach, David Lloyd Leisure explored the benefits of self-supply, a move that would grant the company direct control over its water procurement, usage, and efficiencies.
“One of the key drivers behind our decision to work with Waterscan was the opportunity to join the self-supply community.
By obtaining a self-supply licence, we could take greater ownership of our water management, access better data, and collaborate with other large water users to share best practices. This gives us valuable insight into the wider market, allowing us to align our sustainability initiatives with emerging innovations and regulatory changes.”

Since working with Waterscan, David Lloyd Leisure has been able to take proactive steps in addressing water inefficiencies. Since the implementation of automated meter reading (AMR) technology across its sites, the team at David Lloyd Leisure has significantly improved visibility over water consumption, enabling a faster detection and resolution of leaks. This improved data visibility has provided a clearer picture of consumption patterns, helping to shape more effective reduction strategies.

David Lloyd Leisure’s partnership with Waterscan has been instrumental in accelerating the sustainability journey. As the organisation continues to refine its strategies, leverage technology, and collaborate with sustainability experts, David Lloyd Leisure remains committed to making meaningful, measurable reductions in its environmental footprint while delivering a first-class experience to its members.
