Waterscan won the Tesco invoice validation contract through a tender process more than 2 years ago after it was decided a specialist focus on water was required to maximise saving and refund opportunities. Having worked together since 2005 on surface water drainage, rainwater harvesting and leak detection/repair projects Waterscan had demonstrated their expertise and professionalism.

The project

The initial bill validation and analysis uncovered numerous instances of erroneous and duplicated charging that had not been previously identified. Waterscan’s rigorous process includes a detailed review of the water bills to ensure every charge is scrutinised: the process identified all cost efficiencies to ensure Tesco was paying as little as possible for the levels of use required to operate.

The next stage involved utilising Waterscan’s sector knowledge to accurately benchmark each store type, of which Tesco has many different formats, to identify potential consumption outliers. These outliers were surveyed; issues identified and resolved to return over-consuming sites to efficient operation. These stores had often been historically high users but this had not been previously identified. For example, one site was built with an underground leak and had consistently been one of Tesco’s highest annual consuming stores. After the leak was identified and repaired the store became one of the lowest users within its store-type category.
